Born in Ottawa and currently based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Kate Solar is a filmmaker primarily working in documentary and experimental film. Her work investigates the boundaries of memory, considering what exists in the interstitial space between an experience and the filmic documentation of it. In the last few years, her moving image practice has become centred around handmade filmmaking techniques: the celluloid image can be approached through tactile, material alteration, offering new ways to investigate the image as archive.
Solar holds a BFA in Film from NSCAD University, where she was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2023 NSCAD Student Art Award.
